Motown
The beginning of Motown began in Detroit, America in the late 50’s. The genre was named after Detroit ‘motor city’. Ben Gordy came up with the idea of starting up a record label to make money, however he started by gathering a group of jazz musicians. He chose jazz musicians based of their natural abilities to improvise, read sheet music and just generally pick things up quick. Also at the time lots of cars were being built in Detroit so people wanted jobs and therefore people were willing to work, so he didn’t have to pay the musicians very highly because they were desparate.
During the 60’s and 70’s some of the greatest songs ever written were recorded by the Motown band. ‘Baby love’ by The Supremes, ‘Heard it through the grapevine’ by Marvin Gaye and most of the Jackson 5’s hits are all songs recorded by the motown musicians. The music itself is mainly jazz and blues there is nothing unique about the sound except it’s all the same musicians. Here is an example of 'The Motown Sound',
As for influences there wasn’t many because the music was nothing new it was just blues and jazz.

Punk
Punk as a genre was devoloped around the mid 70's and brought and entire new sound, image and look to the music industry. England, America and even Austrailia was were punk began to form. Around the same time in the 70's there was glam rock which punk fans happened to hate, as a result they rebelled against the glam rock scene and created there own style which became known as punk.
The sound of punk was very angry and in your face. They took the rock guitar riffs from glam rock bands and sped them up, added some fast drums and a mixture of anti-policital angry lyrics and you have yourself a punk song! Some of punks earlier influences would be the stooges, until then no one had seen anything like the stooges before with iggy pops attitude of not caring and some of his strange costumes he wore on stage, for example leather trousers with a horses tail on them was much like punk.
Punk went on to influence many other genres such as, Alternative rock, pop-punk and some 'Emo' music. also some new punk bands such as Green Day, Blink 182 and The Offspring are all influenced by punk and the punk movement.

Another imfluence on punk was Alice Cooper he started his act with white make-up and boa constricters on stage in the early 70's. It was an example of the outrageousness that was to become of punk. A massive influence on punk was David Bowie and his newly created act 'Ziggy Stardust' his crazy make-up and different music influenced punk to be different and outrageous. All these artists could be classed as 'post-punk' and basically stated that the reason for all this was borden with the music industry.
By the mid 70's punk had took off and early punk bands like the clash, the ramones and most famously the sex pistals had emeraged on the music scene and were like nothing anyone had seen before. Anti-social behavior and angry attitude towards people, politics and generally other music was outrageous and started a massive punk movement all across the world. The sex pistols are probably the most significant band of punk. When someone mensions punk people think of the sex pistols, They were one of the few punk bands to achieve worldwide success and be mainstream with their music.
Heres an example of the sound of punk this is one of the Sex Pistols most famour hits, 'god save the queen'.
Punk's image was just crazy and outrageous and on fashion terms the stranger the better. Things like studded leather jackets, dock martin boots, ripped blue jeans spikey belts and crazy spiked and multi-coloured hair was all part of the punk fashion. People did it mainly to be different from everyone else and to get a reaction from people and it worked.
Punk went on to influence many other genres such as, Alternative rock, pop-punk and some 'Emo' music. also some new punk bands such as Green Day, Blink 182 and The Offspring are all influenced by punk and the punk movement.

Glam Metal
Glam metal first began 2 emerge in the early 80's with bands such as Motley Crue,Ratt,W.A.S.P. these were some of the early Glam Metal bands. Many of the early bands came from Main American states such as California, New York and San Francisco. The bands Quiet Riot, Motley Crue, W.A.S.P, Dokkon, Faster Pussy-cat, and L.A. Guns all came from L.A. Warrent and Styper were from California and Ratt from San Diego. North Eastern bands were Twister Sister from New York and Poison from Pennsylvania. The sound of Glam Metal was a combination of early hard rock bands such as AC/CD, Aerosmith, Led zepplin. As well as some Punk influences many of the riffs in Glam Metal are punkish riffs, slowed down. These two influences combined gave a very fat sound that consisted of big guitar riffs along with bigger guitar solos, hard hitting loud drumming and generally a male singer with a high pitched voice. Here is an example, this is an early motely crue song, Livewire.
Usually the lyrics of these songs were mainly about sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll, because at the time this is what the 'rockstars' lifestlye was portrayed to be like. One of the most significant artists of this era were Motley Crue, still at the present day they are still together and touring. Their 1989 album 'Dr. Feelgood' sold over 7 million copies worldwide and managed to top the US charts. Bands such as Bon Jovi, Metallica and Nirvana were all influenced by Motley crue
As for the image of Glam Metal is was very bright and extravagant. Big hair, ripped jeans and make-up on boys all played a part in the fashion of Glam Metal. Once again its noticeable that some of the fashion aspects of Glam Metal were taking from Punk, for example the chains and spikes. Heres and example of punk fashion and glam metal clothing, u will notice many similarities.
Denim, spikes and leather are obvious connections.
As the 80's countinued, other glam metal bands emerged, but they wernt as hard rock they were softer, bands like bon jovi, def lepard, van halen and whitesnake spawned the birth of the 'Rock Ballard'. A rock ballard being a love song with a loud chorus woth huge sounding drums and quiet verses, and usually a very long blazing guitar solo, most bands had at least one rock ballard on their album. The band poison released 'Every rose has its thorn' which was a very big rock ballard in 1988. Not many more glam metal bands came after the 80's only bands that were unfluenced by them, some examples of these bands would be Nickelback or Alter Bridge etc... The Darkness were a band massively influenced by Glam Metal they made and appearance in 2003 but were short lived due to the poor market for glam metal.
Here is a track from the Darkness called 'i believe in a thing called love'.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xBZ3kjeG-A&feature=related. U can notice alot of apects from clasica glam metal, for example 'cheesy' guitar riffs, big guitar solos and really high pitched male vocals.

Grunge
Grunge music was originally started in Seattle, Washington in the mid 80's. It was a new sound and was heavily influenced by metal and punk. Bands such as 'The fartz' and 'The U-men' and more importantly the 'Melvins' are what influenced the 'Grunge' sound. Other influences on grunge are early heavy metal bands such as 'Black Sabbath' and 'Led Zepplin', these bands influenced certain individuals such as Kurt cobain (Nirvana). As a result, the sound is dirty distorted guitars, minor sounding and angry lyrics.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWkbFKJZB0k heres a link to the soundgarden song, spoonman. This will give an example of the sound of grunge.
In an interview, kurt cobain talked about how he was 'pissed off with the world, because of rape violence and problems in the world' these topics are reflected in his lyrics. The term 'grunge' comes from the slang term 'grungy' meaning dark and dirty sounding. The lyrics wern't just angry, they also talked about alienation, apathy and desire for freedom, these were due to their surroundings. Seattle is a very isolated place full of woodland, therefore there wasn't many changes in the surroundings and people had nothing new to dwell upon, this caused people to feel 'alienated' and isolated.
Mudhoney were one of the first grunge bands, and their vocalist was said to be the first person to use the slang term 'grunge'. From this many bands emerged such as 'stone temple pilots', 'soundgarden', and 'mother love bone'. As time went on these bands influenced new bands such as 'nirvana', 'peal jam' and 'alice in chains'. All these bands went on to develop mainstream success, the early bands did also, including soundgarden, but none achieved the success of Nirvana.
After Nirvana signed to 'subpop records', which at the time was the most important grunge label with all the well known grunge bands signed to it. They released their first studio album 'Bleach'. Although it did not generate as much success as their future albums it set the foundations for their upcoming career. Subpop records, was started by jonathan Poneman and Bruce Pavitt and are said to have helped launch the genre that is grunge.
In 1990 Nirvana signed to Geffen records and in 1991 released their world famous album 'Nevermind'. This classic album showed the world grunge music, and gave a new input on the music business. The album sold over 10 million copies and went number one. To this day it is still one of the biggest selling albums of all time.
The song 'smells like teen spirit' from the 'Nevermind' album generated massive success and is still played on music channels, this song lauched Nirvana and made them the world famous band they were.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPQR-OsH0RQ this is the famous smells like teen spirit-Nirvana.
The image of grunge was very different to that of modern day music, they were dressed in normal working man clothing. Due to the isolation and woodland of seattle, the main industries were 'Lumbering' and as a result their image was stonewash jeans and chequey lumerjack shirts. They wern't there to be glamorous, they message was that they wern't popstars they were just normal people playing music.

Bon Jovi (essay on band that has released an album since 2000)
Bon Jovi is a globally famous band formed in New Jersey, USA. The band consists of members Jon Bon Jovi who is singer and songwriter for the band. Ritchie Sambora, electric guitar and co-songwriter, Tico torres, drums. David Bryan, keyboardist and most recently Hugh McDonald on bass. The band formed in 1983 with the original members, including Alec John Such on bass.
The bands original sound was considered to be ‘80’s hair metal’, and from this they have progressed into a stadium rock band, writing number one anthems such as ‘living on a prayer’ and ‘you give love a bad name’ and ‘it’s my life’. During the bands 25 year career they have released 12 studios albums and one live album, selling over 120 million albums worldwide. 9 of their 12 studio albums have gone platinum with ‘Slippery When Wet’ selling 12 million copies in America alone
Throughout their 12 albums their sound has remained to their roots however each album has had some sort of experimental edge. From their self-tited album through to their ‘New Jersey’ album the bands sound has remained hard rock 80’s ‘cock-rock’ so to speak! However when it came to their ‘Keep the Faith’ album in 1992 the band toned down the cheesy hair metal and added a feeling of blues with their sound. The result was an album that sold 13,000,000 copies and topped the European, UK and Australian charts, it signified the end of the hair metal bon jovi and introduced the new rock’n’roll bon Jovi.
In 1995 the bands 7th studio album brought another new twist on the Bon Jovi sound. The album had a darker feeling appose to their more popular bouncy rock tunes and love ballads. After the huge success of the ‘These Days’ album selling 10,000,000 copies the band continued to produce globally successful albums and most recently the ‘Lost Highway album (2008)’ which introduced a ‘country’ feel to it.
In terms on bon Jovi’s influences their idols are classic rock bands such as Aerosmith and Thin Lizzy, through to successful artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Jimi Hendrix and The legendary Beatles. These influences can be heard through Bon Jovi’s whole discography for example the ‘These days’ has a lot of rock blues rhythm much like that of Aerosmith and in a few occasions the band has covered ‘Boys are back in town’ by thin lizzy at concerts. All their influences can be picked out in bon jovis sound however the band remains to have that original edge over other rock’n’roll bands, this is mostly due to Jon’s very unique sounding voice, that makes Bon Jovi the band they are today.
The bands image has changed with time, starting with big hair and torn blue jeans during their 80’s period, then to the denim jackets, leather pants and shorter haircuts in the 90’ which has remained a part of their image the current day. So after 25 years of practice and 12 studio albums, 6 number ones and 9 platinum albums its no surprise that bon jovi are one of the most successful bands of the past 20 years.
